December 26

Today marked my brother's return to the USA....

On November 30th Dennis departed for Argentina on a 2 month motorcycle adventure around Argentina and Chile.

On December 8th I received a telephone call (at 5:30 a.m.) from Silvio at the hostel in Puerto Madryn where Dennis was staying. Dennis had fallen while moving the motorcycle from the street to the parking lot and was in ICU with a fractured skull and concussion.

After weeks of communicating via email with Dr. J. J. Rivarola in Puerto Madryn; Mariano Calderon in Buenos Aires and Silvio I was able to talk with Dennis on the telephone for 30 minutes.

After leaving ICU and being moved to the general clinic he stayed for another week or so.

Finally, on Dec. 23rd he was transported from the hospital by ambulance to the hostel. Silvio assisted Dennis with the retrieval of all his gear from the police and helped him get on a flight to Buenos Aires.

In Buenos Aires, Mariano coordinated the travel plans for Dennis and his return to the USA. It took him 48 hours from the time he got to the international airport in Argentina and landing in San Francisco.

As awful as this whole event was because of the seriousness of Dennis' injury I was helped by my friend Hedy, who spoke with the doctor and translated messages; Silvio who went to great lengths to make sure I realized Dennis was NOT in a motorcycle accident; Dr. Juan Jose Rivarola who was the attending physician at the ICU and sort of adopted Dennis. Dr. J.J. exchanged many emails and used his personal cell phone for Dennis to talk with me. Last, but certainly not least was the assistance of Mariano Calderon who's efficient handling of everything to coordinate Dennis' travel plans made his return so easy.

These strangers in Argentina were absolutely awesome - giving so much of themselves for a stranger.

I experienced so much frustration simply because I don't speak Spanish (I'm starting Rosetta Stone Spanish soon). I can't begin to communicate the level of my frustration that was caused by not having any information to give the medical personnel about my brother. Or because there was no way to contact my brother because he didn't take a cell phone with him?

So - if you travel alone make a list of your medical conditions; your medications; your driver's license, passport, credit card information; insurance and anything else that MIGHT help someone else help you in the event you are incapacitated. Don't count on being able to use a computer as the only form of communication.

Glad he is "home".

More bags.....

I found some more lovely fabric and used it to make more of the Noriko bags.

Nice to have such a great project to showcase the fabric! Also some great donated buttons!

Larry's Hard Work

We participated in the Lakeport Light Parade on Nov. 29 - and will also participate in the Kelseyville Light Parade tonight.

The following photos are of our rides - Larry spent many hours making them lovely for the holidays.

Noriko Handbags

Lazy Girl Designs offered a free pattern for a handbag that looked really nice so I decided to give it a try. To be honest...very easy to put together. The hardest part was threading the bead on 1/4 ribbon.

The pink floral bag is from material I had in my stash and is a gift for one of my gardener friends. The brown and blue bag is the result of hunting at the fabric store.

Marinated Artichokes

We recently had marinated, grilled artichokes while traveling in Monterey County California. When we returned home I checked the internet and couldn't find a recipe so I have tried my hand at creating my own.

Marinated and Grilled Artichokes

I use a gas grill, but these still have a delightful smoky taste. Must be the slightly charred petals.

4 large artichokes
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup light olive oil
1 teaspoon granulated garlic/garlic powder OR 4 or 5 sliced garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon dry basil
1/2 teaspoon dry oregano
1/2 onion - thin slices
Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Slice artichoke tops off, trim stems. Boil or steam artichokes until bottoms pierce easily or petal pulls off easily.

Drain artichokes and allow to cool. Cut each in half lengthwise and remove fuzzy center and any purple tipped petals.

Mix marinade in a large plastic bag and add cooked artichokes. Coat on all sides with marinade. For best flavor marinate overnight in the refrigerator or a minimum of 1 hour. Turn the bag over a few times during the marinating process.

Remove artichokes from bag and place cut side down on medium hot grill. Grill until lightly browned (5 to 7 minutes). Turn over and drizzle some of the remaining marinade over the artichokes. Grill until the petal tips are lightly charred, 3 to 4 minutes more.

Serve hot, at room temperature or cold.

Garlic Mayo:

1 cup mayonnaise (Best Foods or Hellman's)
Minced garlic (best to use FRESH garlic, not that bottled stuff) I use a micro-plane to get the garlic as fine as possible. The amount of garlic is up to you. Personally I use 4 or 5 cloves.

Mix together. Keep refrigerated.

Sewing is fun!

I found a blog with directions for sewing in a zipper. For me, zippers have always been a source of frustration. Well, apparently all I needed was concise instructions I could look at! These are some of the bags I have made using this easy zipper install technique and donated zippers.

I haunt second hand shops and thrift stores for fabric. At times there are some fantastic finds!

The fabric for the bags with the straps came from upholstery swatches. They don't show up there well on my bedspread!

Keeping busy....

A casserole carrier; a bowl; a zippered bag; and a triangle bag.

A casserole carrier with Christmas kitten fabric; a bowl made with canine motif fabric with pink polka dot brown fabric; same fabric for a zippered bag; and a triangle bag made with a different canine motif with a lining made form fabric with black doggie bones.

In between getting the house cleaned for the holidays I'm continuing some sewing projects. All of these were from yesterday.

The fabrics I used for these projects were found at Joann's Fabrics. Watch out for the power of cute!
